Moor Hall

Back to ICT Putney

First day "working" for ICT was a Sunday – traveling from Kingston upon Thames where I’d been out with Paul and Dorothy (Tuckers) – and a “blind date” – on public transport – snowing very hard (must have my dates mixed up here - because it was snowing that day - but it certainly couldn't (even with British weather) have been snowing in July!! - must re-check) – eventually got to Cookham Station – around 19:00 and decided to walk to Moor Hall – saw it in the distance – decided to “cut the corner” – little did I know that the snow had drifted into Cookham Moor (in front of the Hall) – and I stepped off the road into about 4 feet of snow!! Floundering – feeling an idiot – big suitcase, and nearly late - doors closed early.

Checked in - and settled into a shared bedroom in one of the wooden shed-like dormitories that graced the gardens in those days. The course was on - I don’t know what – presumably – punched cards etc.. other course attendees I met up with were:

bullet

Bob Simmon(d)s - Did he have the Sessions Album from which I heard Sun Dance by MJQ for the first time? Still hunting for that track on the Internet. Have subsequently (August, 2003) found it - and am disappointed.... its not the track I remember!!

bullet

Bob French,

bullet

Sashi Gohkle,

bullet

Steve ?? - tall thin, clean-shaven, glasses, blackish-hair - Manchester?? headed up some programming Team or other a couple of years later

bullet

Garry ?? - thin, tall, clean-shaven, light brown straight hair - he also headed up a programming team later.

bullet

Bernard du Sautoy,  - see here  - ditto heading up a programming team.

bullet

Joy ?? The trousers didn’t go down too well?,

bullet

Tony ???? suffered from rotism (couldn’t pronounce his R’s) – came from ?? Yorkshire??,

bullet

Mike Todd Classical Language Graduate - wrote a 4 card program that just reversed memory - very useful.

Good times were spent at Moor Hall on many subsequent courses. The village of course is very pleasant offering many restaurants and pubs, and in the summer there's lots of activities to be undertaken both in Cookham and nearby Maidenhead. In these days there was a good Disco on the river just opposite ?Monkey Island? in Maidenhead. Another memory is seeing a course leap off Cookham Bridge into the Thames – all dressed up – a Thursday (end of course)  tradition, and crawl up the lawn of the Ferry pub.
